Artisan Spotlight: Hook in A Hand

First off, tell us about yourself?
I’m Grace and I hand crochet all my crochet items I sell!

How did you start your crochet business, and how long have you been doing it?
I learned when I was just 6 years old. I’ve been crocheting ever since and then decided to sell my items so others can enjoy them as well. I live in Fredericksburg, VA, I love white chocolate, Starbucks, Netflix, and hot chocolate!

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I got my inspiration through my grandmother who has been crocheting as long as she can remember, as well as my great grandma, (crocheting is in the family blood 😉).

What do you love most about your handmade business?
What I love most about my business is seeing photos of customers with there little ones holding something I’ve made. And seeing the smiles on their faces.

Outside of crafting what else do you enjoy doing?
I love Lularoe. I host Lularoe parties when I’m not crocheting. I’m also cleaning after kiddos and taking care of my doggy.

Artisan Spotlight: Eileen Jewelry

Tell us about yourself
Hi ! I’m Virginie, 33 year old from France. I’m the owner/maker of Eileen Jewelry. I’m a pretty normal girl who loves simple and natural things.  I’m happy to be able to work for myself and do what I love to do everyday, and I hope that my jewelry reflects that 🙂

Where are you from  ?

I was raised and lived in Paris until my 28 year old when I left my job and apartment to travel for a year. I always was a big city lover but my trip changed everything. And when I came back from that freedom and exploring, all that I’ve wanted was to keep nature as close to me as possible. I now live outside of Paris surrounded by a beautiful little forest inhabited by shy and cute wildlife.

How did you start creating your artwork, and how long have you been doing it ?
I started making my own jewelry 3 years ago when I broke a beautiful necklace bought on Etsy. I couldn’t find it for sale anymore and the shop owner never replied to me when I’ve asked her if she had a repair service. I was bumped because that was my all time favorite necklace. So I’ve told myself that if people can do it, why not me ? So I’ve looked online how to fix it and that was it. I was hooked. I started making and wearing my own necklaces and got compliments from friends and coworkers that finally convinced me to open a shop. And here I am. Turns out bad customer service can sometimes be a blessing 😉

Where do you get your inspiration from ?
Sometimes ideas comes out of nowhere, while walking in nature or before I fall asleep, then I have to send myself a note with my phone so the ideas are not lost forever after a good night sleep 😀 Some other time, by playing with my supplies, browsing suppliers shops or looking up for crystal rarities.

What do you love most about your craft/business ?
Freedom!  Falling asleep every night relaxed and happy instead of being stressed and exhausted by a day at work. Waking up naturally every morning and not by an awful alarm clock. Getting ready knowing that I can take my time. And then working on orders placed by people that loves what I’m doing and not because they just want the next trendy thing.

If I want the afternoon free to do something else or just to do nothing and enjoy some lazyness, I can just finish up the orders in the morning, go to the post office and then have time for whatever I feel like doing for the rest of the day.
I love the way things are working right now. I feel like « I’ve  made it », but I also feel free. I have enough orders to keep me busy, but not too much so I don’t have time for myself anymore. Which wouldn’t be the point of doing this, I’m not looking for being rich, or making 200 necklaces or rings a day. I want my jewelry to be special and made in small quantities. I want to be able to take the time I need for each piece, so they can be as I would like to received them if they were meant for me. If I’m not happy with something I’ve made, I never hesitate and start again from scratch. No matter the time spent and materials used, I wouldn’t ship something that doesn’t make me happy or that is meant to break after a few days because it was made in a hurry. I’m my own boss and that gives a lot of freedom 😀

Outside of crafting, what else do you enjoy doing ?
Traveling, walking or being lazy in nature, taking photos of the beautiful spring light, gardening and learning to make new things. I also love to collect old books and have some kind of fetish for first editions. Being outdoor is what I love the most. In summer, I can spend every day outside and I never ever get bored, not doing anything special, just enjoying the elements 🙂

I recently opened a new shop on Etsy called « Stones and Moonlight » where I’ve included everything I love : Natural beads, crystals and stones, my love for plants and their powers, beautiful treasures that I find on my everyday adventures and travels, and my passion for photography.
Whether I use antler tips that comes from natural shed or stones that were brought to me from the other side of the planet, they all carry life and adventures. And I feel lucky and happy to be able to use these unique pieces in my jewelry everyday.

First off, tell us about yourself.

Hello my name is Mari and I am a fairly new mommy. I have a 9 month old daughter named Cataleya. I’m fortunate enough to have a hubby who makes enough for me to stay home five days (I do work two days). I am a SoCal native but found my home here in the Bay Area with the hubby.

Where are you from?

I was born in Ventura county. Specifically in Port Hueneme California (it’s a small beach town near Catalina and Camarillo). I have moved over 11 times but all within Cali so I would say in pretty familiar with the state lol. I’ve lived in San Diego, mammoth Lakes, Camarillo, San Francisco to name a few!

How did you start creating your artwork, and how long have you been doing it?

I began sewing way way way back when I was still a child; my mom taught me! But I began sewing toys while I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted her to have sturdy safe toys that I knew exactly what they were made of plus it’s so much cooler to have toys hand made/sewn. Plus I was able to decide exactly the function and look of the toys. My family kept bugging/pushing me to open up a shop bc they loved my toys so I did last October (2015) I’m still fairly new.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my daughter: watching the way she plays, figuring out what she prefers, coming up with toys that I could use to educate her with, and the color combos/contrasts she likes… Really helps to have my own model/tester lol.:

What do you love most about your craft/business?

I love the fact that I am not only able to make my daughter happy but other babies/children too. And I love knowing that they are playing with safe fun educational toys!

Outside of crafting, what else do you enjoy doing?

I am mostly an outdoorsy person: hiking (though it’s way to cold right now), sight walking, swimming, and my job (jcrew worker) and now that I’m not pregnant anymore I can actually work on the window displays again!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I always always welcome custom requests: I love working with customers to create just the prefect toy for them and their kids!

Artisan Spotlight: JeSoul Studio

First off, tell us about yourself.

Hello! My name is Jensine Sullivan and I own and operate JeSoul Studio. I design bohemian, tribal, and gypsy inspired jewelry. I am a self-represented artist in jewelry design (SRAJD) and published jewelry artist. I opened my shop on Etsy a little over 2-years ago. I spent the majority of my life working in art and design related professions so jewelry design came as no surprise. It’s funny how things happen! I totally love what I do and I am so blessed to have found this wonderful creative niche.

How did you start creating your artwork, and how long have you been doing it?

It amazes me how things just sort of happen. We go through life not knowing that we have a passion just waiting for us. But first, you have to find it, or in this case it found me. About five years ago, I had an idea to make fashion accessories. My first project was to make a pretty scarf. As I worked on my scarf, I got the idea to hand stitch some crystals to it. I went to my local craft store and purchased some crystals. I soon found myself dreaming of unique accessories that I could use them in.  I went to a bead shop that I had heard about a few years earlier and when I walked in, my mouth literally dropped to the floor. I thought I died and went to heaven. So I purchased a few more crystals and some agate beads. I remember going home and just sitting there staring at my beads. I was so clueless. I made a few funky brooches and I was so proud. At that moment, I was hooked. I began making necklaces and staying up until wee hours of the night. The jewelry bug had completely consumed me. And that scarf? It was the only one I ever made. Of course, I hold on to it for sentimental reasons.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I don’t think I get it from any particular thing. It just happens. And it seems that it comes from very unexpected places, like home interior magazines or even the artwork in a calendar. I think my emotions and mood plays a big part too. Many times just out of the blue an idea pops in my head. I have to write it down or make a quick sketch or I’ll forget. Also, There are so many amazingly talented artists on Etsy that make jewelry components. That in its self is so inspiring.

What do you love most about your craft/business?

Freedom! Being able to just be myself and be my own boss. My business is a reflection of who I am. Sure, you have to be tough and push yourself. I am definitely my own worst critic. But for me it’s all about personal growth. You have to trust yourself and go with what feels good. That can be hard sometimes but everyday is a new day. When I do have a bad day, it’s always a learning experience. I have also met the most amazing people. Some of which are very dear to me.

Outside of crafting, what else do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy so many things, but gardening is definitely at the top of my list. Because I spend so much time in my home studio, getting outside is a priority and it’s good for the soul. In the winter months or when I need to take time out from jewelry design, I will work on design projects around the house. I always seem to have something going on. I’m currently in the process of designing a large textile wall hanging. I also make it a daily rule to get exercise. It really jump starts my creativity and gets my juices going.
