Artisan Spotlight: Kindness Confetti

First off, tell us about yourself?
Hi, my name is Katie. I make DIY Craft tutorials on Youtube and I sell hand embroidered sequin earrings and hand painted clutches on Etsy.

Where are you from?
I’m from Adelaide, South Australia.

How did you start making hand made items, and how long have you been doing it?
I’ve been hand making all kinds of things ever since I can remember. As a really little kid my mum let me use her good art and craft supplies and ever since then I’ve always had a creative project up my sleeve. I was lucky to be surrounded by very creative people as I was growing up and that likely rubbed off on me. In recent years I was working very hard in an office job and not making any time for art and craft and I felt like a part of my self was missing. Mid way through 2016 I moved to Colombia, South America to explore a different country and culture. I didn’t have a job while I was there, so I finally had the time to really focus on creative projects. Not long after that I launched my channel and started making my Youtube tutorials in early 2017. I really love all different kind of crafts, so I made my channel as an outlet for myself to do all these projects, and share the process with others along the way.

It wasn’t until I returned home to Australia midway through 2017 that I started thinking about making items to physically sell. I saw some similar styles of handmade clutches on Pinterest in September this year and I decided to see if I could make one, but in my own style, it turned out to be a success, so I decided to make a few more. I had tried hand beading and embroidering headbands in 2011 and ever since then I realised how much I enjoy it, so I decided to try making earrings out of felt and sequins, and they were received really well.

What do you love most about your Handmade business?
I love seeing someone using or wearing something I have made, its so nice to know someone is getting enjoyment from it and that I have touched their lives in someway. I also love the rush from getting that spark of inspiration and holding onto it until it turns into something beautiful. I recently had a night where I could barely sleep because I just had so many ideas going through my mind that I just wanted to wake up and start making things straight away.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get inspiration from everywhere, everything in my physical and online environment. Last year I drew a lot of inspiration from the textiles I saw in South America, there was so much colour and vibrance. I also love Instagram and I have made a lot of creative friends through that platform, often their work really inspires me. I love the colour movement accounts that you can find on Instagram, that style has also influenced me as I like to use a lot of colour and glitter in my work. I also draw on Pinterest a lot for idea inspiration, its such a great resource.

Outside of crafting what else do you enjoy doing?
I love travelling and meeting people from different countries and I love exploring new cultures and learning new things about different parts of the world and trying new and delicious foods. I love my country, but I believe there is so much more out there in the rest of the world to discover and learn about, different perspectives to discover, different ways to do things, different sayings, different traditions, different values, different senses of humour, different histories, beautiful places to see, I want to know it all! I have been lucky enough to explore a lot of Australia and travel to many countries, including Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, New Zealand, Hawaii, Vanuatu and a few more, but in the future I have many more places on my bucket list. I just have to keep working hard so that I can get to see everything that I want to.

Is there any thing else you would like to share?
I have a ‘freebies’ section on my website where I have free templates to some of my craft tutorials, and I have a 12 page colouring book, designed by me, full of inspirational quotes that is available as a free download. Please feel free to head there and check it out.

How did you start your crochet business, and how long have you been doing it?
I learned when I was just 6 years old. I’ve been crocheting ever since and then decided to sell my items so others can enjoy them as well. I live in Fredericksburg, VA, I love white chocolate, Starbucks, Netflix, and hot chocolate!

I got my inspiration through my grandmother who has been crocheting as long as she can remember, as well as my great grandma, (crocheting is in the family blood 😉).

What do you love most about your handmade business?
What I love most about my business is seeing photos of customers with there little ones holding something I’ve made. And seeing the smiles on their faces.

First off, tell us about yourself.

Hello my name is Mari and I am a fairly new mommy. I have a 9 month old daughter named Cataleya. I’m fortunate enough to have a hubby who makes enough for me to stay home five days (I do work two days). I am a SoCal native but found my home here in the Bay Area with the hubby.

Where are you from?

I was born in Ventura county. Specifically in Port Hueneme California (it’s a small beach town near Catalina and Camarillo). I have moved over 11 times but all within Cali so I would say in pretty familiar with the state lol. I’ve lived in San Diego, mammoth Lakes, Camarillo, San Francisco to name a few!

How did you start creating your artwork, and how long have you been doing it?

I began sewing way way way back when I was still a child; my mom taught me! But I began sewing toys while I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted her to have sturdy safe toys that I knew exactly what they were made of plus it’s so much cooler to have toys hand made/sewn. Plus I was able to decide exactly the function and look of the toys. My family kept bugging/pushing me to open up a shop bc they loved my toys so I did last October (2015) I’m still fairly new.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my daughter: watching the way she plays, figuring out what she prefers, coming up with toys that I could use to educate her with, and the color combos/contrasts she likes… Really helps to have my own model/tester lol.:

What do you love most about your craft/business?

I love the fact that I am not only able to make my daughter happy but other babies/children too. And I love knowing that they are playing with safe fun educational toys!

Outside of crafting, what else do you enjoy doing?

I am mostly an outdoorsy person: hiking (though it’s way to cold right now), sight walking, swimming, and my job (jcrew worker) and now that I’m not pregnant anymore I can actually work on the window displays again!

My style trend is Handmade Accessories: Felted Scarves, Collars, Shawls, Handbags, Covers, Wall Decor and many more.
Everything that I create, I constitute a pattern and I always count the amount of material since I use only high quality materials. My products are made of wool, natural fabric, natural fiber, water and natural Turkish olive soap and because of these materials; my products easily withstand rain and snow. My products are soft, thin, cloud-like in texture and very long lasting.
Felt is the oldest form of fabric and is becoming popular as people rediscover the versatility and durability of it. Since it may be the oldest fabric known to man, there are many references to felt in ancient writings since it’s not woven and doesn’t require a loom for its production.
The process of felting doesn’t need expensive materials or equipment. Just about anyone can add soapy water to fleece, make a felted mass, control the outcome and then quality felt is achieved through experience and learning. Aside from choosing the best type of fiber for the application, one must consider the layout of fibers for consistent felt, the weight of wool in relation to the area of its distribution to determine shaping, the amount of soap to use and the temperature of water.
It’s hard work, but it’s my passion and one of the things I absolutely love to do, especially when I make them for happy owners!
