In the second video, bespoke jewelry designer Tracy Matthews shares:

  • How she went through a designer’s worst nightmare (bankruptcy)
  • How her experience destroyed her confidence

Artisan Spotlight: Hiffycakes

First off, tell us about yourself! My name is Hifza Mohammed, I’m originally from London but moved to Kuala Lumpur in 2013 when my husband got a job here. I started attending leather workshop as a hobby and I fell in love with it. The craft allows me to be creative and think of new ways to put leather designs together.

How did you start creating your artwork, and how long have you been doing it?

Only in recent months I have started making purses and wallets and giving them to friends as gifts. I’ve been asked many times if I make bags and when I say, ‘its only a hobby’ they convinced me otherwise.

In November I opened shop ‘Hiffycakes’ , handmade leather bags & accessories. All my collection is made in my studio in KL and each bag is designed & hand sewn using the best quality materials.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get inspired by artisans and craftsmen that are around Malaysia and beyond. It takes a skilled craftsmen to create something beautifully aesthetic and which will last for a long time, such as a leather bag.
My mother has also inspired me to design, she’s a skilled dressmaker who designs and make her own clothing collection.

What do you love most about your craft/business?

What I love about what I do is when I get to speak to my customers and have a connection. I have been doing ‘craft fairs’ for Christmas so I get to meet them in person to talk about the collection and get vital feedback. But most of all I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Outside of crafting what else do you enjoy doing?

In my spare time, I love to read on the balcony with my current book ‘ I am Malala’. I am a keen baker and my speciality is ‘ Profiteroles’ & ‘Sticky toffee pudding’.
